Second Grade Curriculum

Academics

Reading

This subject covers the phonics-based A Beka curriculum. Phonics is covered in-depth with the “132 special sounds” and their rules. Daily oral language is completed, which covers related grammar rules. Spelling covers the “132 special sounds,” and teaches vocabulary words and definitions.

Mathematics

This subject covers integers to the thousands, addition and subtraction facts (including addition and subtraction with regrouping through the thousands), telling time, measurement, graphing, patterning, introduction to geometry, simple algebra, multiplication facts for many of the tables, and related verbal and written story problems. A Beka curriculum is used.

Science

Units include personal care, the animal world, insects, the plant world, energy, force, friction, Earth, sky, and air.

Health

This subjects covers three units: personal care, manners, and safety.

Social studies

Students learn about early American communities, starting with the Pilgrims and culminating with America as it is now. Topics are covered concerning America’s freedoms, the flag, map skills, state memory and location, and patriotic songs and holidays.

Art

This subject considers how to use various mediums and uses several techniques. The students improve motor skills and learn about art vocabulary. Students participate in Hosanna’s “Art Lemonade,” our annual fundraiser to further student instruction in and practice of the arts. Each student displays three pieces of artwork.

Handwriting

This subject starts with the manuscript D' Nelian alphabet and progresses to the cursive alphabet. Creative writing is used to become proficient in the various genres. Skills are taught concerning the use of main ideas, topic sentences, details, description, feelings, colorful words, similes, “the magic of three,” voice, personification and satisfying endings.

Spiritual

Bible

God’s Word is studied by reading the Bible every day, praying, memorizing scripture, completing a Bible lesson, and conducting “Sword drills.” There is a daily emphasis on godly topics as they relate to the various academic topics in our A Beka curriculum.  See "Beyond Core" tab for additional details.

Special Events & Field Trips

Field trips vary every year. Some examples include attending Kinderkonzerts and Christian Youth Theater plays.
